"The Magic of Dance"
Sugar Land Dance Center's annual student showcase "The Magic of Dance" will take place on
Dress Rehearsal takes place the same day as recital. We schedule dances in blocks of 4-6 dances to minimize the time each dancer needs to be in the theater. The first block for rehearsal will be the Creative Dance and PreAcademy classes. These are the youngest dancers in the show and they do not have costume changes. One parent or guardian should accompany each dancer.
This group rehearses from 9:00-9:30am in costume and onstage. This rehearsal is critical; this gives the children a chance to go backstage and work out where and how they enter and exit and do their their dance.
Once you go into the theater audience, you will find the row labeled with your dancer's class. Dancers sit in one row and the parent can sit right behind them in the next row.
When we are ready for the class to practice onstage, we will make an adventure train and Choo Choo backstage. We will be pointing out the interesting things to see and preparing them for lighting changes. We will walk them out onstage and show them where they go. Then we will walk back off and try it with lights and music. Once they are done, we will walk them back out into the audience to their row and they can leave.
Please arrive early to the theater! We cannot wait for late arrivals and once we have rehearsed onstage, we cannot go back and repeat for late arrivals. We start and end on time so please do not be late.
Dress Rehearsal for all dancers will take place the same day as recital at the theater. We schedule dances in 30 minute blocks of 4-6 dances to minimize the time each dancer needs to be in the theater.
The time blocks for each dancer have been distributed by email and in the costumes bags. If you have not received this info, please contact the front desk and they can send you your specific times.
Dancers should arrive at the theater in their first costume with hair and makeup done. If you are in more than one dance, your time block schedule will tell you which dance is first. One parent or guardian should stay with the dancer during the rehearsal.
Academy level dancers with costume changes will need to use the lobby restrooms to change costumes. Please be sure to eat lunch during one of the gaps (please note food and drinks are not allowed in the theater). Right before the finale rehearsal begins at noon, all academy students will be taken backstage to their assigned dressing rooms with their costumes. At this time, everyone in the audience will be asked to leave so the house manager can prepare for the opening of the house.
Conservatory students dancing in "In Living Color" (the opening) will need to be onstage at 10:00am in the wings ready to go in hair/makeup/costume. Please check your individual schedules for next dances. Conservatory dancers in the opening will be allowed to be dropped off at 9:45am and use the assigned dressing room for costume changes.
Dancers in Lower Division classes (Creative Dance and PreAcademy) will check in during Intermission on the right side of the lobby. Teachers and staff will be checking dancers in and taking them backstage. Act Two is approximately 45 minutes long and dancers will be backstage for all of Act Two. You will need to get back to the theater by 1:45pm if you are not watching Act One. Act One starts at 1pm. Dancers will check in at intermission to go backstage (sometime between 1:50 and 2:10). Sorry, we cannot check anyone in before intermission starts.
Once we have all the dancers checked in for the preschool classes, our staff will escort them to one of 5 stations and stay with them throughout the entirety of Act Two. We will be lining up backstage to go on, performing onstage, moving to the first activity station, moving to the second activity station and then lining up to go across stage for finale. They go across stage with a teacher. After the curtain closes, they will be the first groups to be dismissed.
All other dancers (Academy levels and Conservatory) will be participating in the finale rehearsal at 12:00pm. At this time, all dancers will go to their backstage dressing rooms and return to the stage for finale practice. The theater will also be cleared at this time and dancers will be checked in backstage in their dressing rooms. They will remain backstage for the duration of the show. The show will end by 3:00pm.
After the show, each class will be brought in front of the curtain one by one. We start with the youngest dancers first. One parent or guardian may approach the stage to pick up their child. If you wish to take pictures, please do so in the lobby or wait until all the classes have been dismissed. The fewer people there are in front of the stage, the faster it goes.
We ask that everyone leave the videotaping to us. Any phone or tablet held up is a distraction to the rest of the audience and appears in the professional recording we do of the show. This recording is distributed to all the families in the show so there is no need for personal devices to record.
